The place and its story

Why it deserves time

The Parroquia de Santa Prisca y San Sebastián is Taxco’s defining architectural landmark. Its richly worked stone façade, twin towers and interior decoration belong to the history of a town deeply connected with silver wealth. José de la Borda’s patronage is central to that story. The building remains a parish church, so its religious function takes precedence over sightseeing. Exterior views from the plaza and close attention to permitted interior details offer complementary experiences.

Slow down and notice

Three things to look for

01

Stand back in Plaza Borda to understand the towers and façade together, then approach for the smaller carved details.

02

Inside, when visitor access is allowed, look at the relationship between altarpieces, paintings and the architectural space. Avoid flash and follow local photography rules.

03

Remember that the church’s scale reflects both artistic work and the economy that paid for it. It is a useful starting point for asking about the town beyond its postcard view.

Make a thoughtful visit

Plan your visit

Review the current Guerrero travel advisory before planning Taxco travel. If proceeding on appropriate current advice, confirm church access around services. Allow about an hour for careful looking, with more time in the square. Cobbled slopes and steps make comfortable footwear important. Arrange transport and do not assume the approach shown on a map is step-free.

Time allowances are ATA planning suggestions, not opening hours. Confirm admission, availability and access directly before travelling.
